<p>Last week, Wellington Jighere, a notable Scrabble player mentioned HALFWAY in a post in <a href="http://www.scrabbleverse.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Scrabbleverse</a>, being a word that does not take any hooks and cannot be combined with any other letter to form a word. For some time I've referred to words formed by adding a letter as a blank anagram. The idea behind the term is that you add a BLANK to an existing word, and then ANAGRAM to form a new word. All of the words formed by adding a blank to a bingo stem like SATIRE are blank anagrams.</p> <p>Well, HALFWAY is one of many words that do not have blank anagrams. With a little effort and a lot of patience I created a list of 7 letter words that do not have blank anagrams. In addition to not being able to add a blank or floater on the board, all but three hundred of them do not have any other anagrams.</p> <p>I am providing this link to the list for those who have expressed an interest. </p> <p><a href="https://www.tylerhosting.com/hoot/downloads/noBA.txt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noBA.txt</a> - Words that do not have any blank anagrams</p> <p><a href="https://www.tylerhosting.com/hoot/downloads/noABA.txt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noABA.txt</a> - Words that do not have any blank anagrams and have no other anagrams.</p><div class="item_footer"><p><small><a href="https://tylerhosting.com/b2e/dbell.php/no-ba">Original post</a> blogged on <a href="http://www.tylerhosting.com/b2e/">Switched Keys</a>.</small></p></div>

Last week, Wellington Jighere, a notable Scrabble player mentioned HALFWAY in a post in Scrabbleverse, being a word that does not take any hooks and cannot be combined with any other letter to form a word. For some time I've referred to words formed by adding a letter as a blank anagram. The idea behind the term is that you add a BLANK to an existing word, and then ANAGRAM to form a new word. All of the words formed by adding a blank to a bingo stem like SATIRE are blank anagrams.

Well, HALFWAY is one of many words that do not have blank anagrams. With a little effort and a lot of patience I created a list of 7 letter words that do not have blank anagrams. In addition to not being able to add a blank or floater on the board, all but three hundred of them do not have any other anagrams.

I am providing this link to the list for those who have expressed an interest.

Card Box Searches

This is the final post in the three part series on Scrabble Word Study using card boxes. This section illustrates how you would do some of the searches that you want to add to your card boxes. You may also want to just do these searches to become familiar with the Hoot search options. This lists the card box to add to but you may choose to use standard boxes, or lists instead of what is shown.

Two letter words

Search Type: Letter Count
Size: 2 letters
Add to: Lists > Anagrams, "Two Letter Words"

Two letter hooks (or hooked threes)

Search Type: Hook Words
Size: 2 letters
Add to: Lists > Hooks, "Two Letter Hooks"

Hooks help you to identify places where you can add a letter to a word while forming your own word in the other direction. Hooked threes is another way to study all the "words" formed by adding a hook to a two letter word.

Search Type: Predefined > Hooked Words
Size: 3 letters
Add to: Anagrams

JQXZ 3-5 letter words

Search Type: Pattern > *[JQXZ]*
Size: 3 letters to 5 letters
Add to: Anagrams

Q not U 2-7 letter words

Search Type: Predefined > Q not U
Size: 2 letters to 7 letters
Add to: Anagrams

V or C 3-5 letter words

Search Type: Pattern > *[VC]*
Size: 3 letters to 5 letters
Add to: Anagrams

Top 3 six letter stems: TISANE, SATIRE, RETAIN (List Box)

There are two possible ways to study stems in Hoot. You can create a card box with all the anagrams of the term + blank, and you would have up to 26 cards. These are added to Lists so you can determine if you have mastered the stem in question. You can alternately just add them to the standard Anagrams card box.

Search Type: Stems, Top 6 Letter > Search
Order by: Alphagram
Tap on TISANE
Add to: Anagrams

or

Search Type: Anagrams > "TISANE?"
Size: 7 letters
Order: Alphagram descending
Add to: Lists > Anagrams, "Stem TISANE"

Alternately, you can study stems as blank anagrams (not generally recommended). This gives you one card for each stem with all the possible words. For TISANE, that would be 96 words.

Search Type: Pattern > "TISANE"
Add to: Blank Anagrams

Vowel Dumps (3-5 letter words)

Search Type: Predefined > Vowel Heavy
Size: 3 letters to 5 letters
Add to: Anagrams

High Fives

High Fives are five letter words ending in a high point tile (FHYW). While the words are selected based on whether they begin or end in a high point tile, the query will be for all anagrams. If you want to focus just on the High Fives you could use the slide show to study instead of a quiz. Alternately, you could quiz in flashcard mode and mark the words as correct if you know the High Fives

Search Type: Predefined > High Fives
Add to: Anagrams

High Eights

High Eights are terms that you may be able to play in one of the corners for big points if your play covers both TWS, and the high point tile is on the DLS. For example, ADEQUATE could net you over 300 points.

Search Type: Pattern > (???[JQXZ]*)|(????[JQXZ]*)
Size: 8 letters
Add to: Lists > Anagrams, "High Eights"

Admittedly, getting to play one of these is a long shot, but it doesn't hurt to learn some of these words. Replace JQXZ with 45 to learn

Sevens from STARLINE?

Some people advise learning sevens from a set of letters like STARLINE?. You may want to use other terms.

Search Type: Word Builder, "STARLINE?"
Size: 7 letters
Add to: Lists > Anagrams, "STARLINE? Sevens"

Double Difficult Letters

I often see recommendations to study words with double I's or double U's, either separate or together. An expanded version of this recommendation from Art Chester is to study double letters for each letter in CHIKUVWY. You can do this in Hoot with

Search Type: Pattern, *([CHIKUVWY])*\1*
Size: 3 - 5 letters
Add to: Lists > Anagrams, "Double Difficult"

You can also study each letter separately with *(I)*\1*

If you want to study just words with double letters together take out the middle asterisk and try
*([CHIKUVWY])\1*
or *(I)\1 for individual letters. Note that there are some letters that are never repeated together.

Quiz settings

Before you get too far in your study you will probably want to check out the card box related settings. One of the newest ones is Flashcard mode. In this mode, you don't have to enter you answers. Instead you answer them mentally, tap on the list to see the correct answers. Then swipe up if correct, down if incorrect. To enable this Enable Flashcard mode.

Other settings are

Auto advance - advances to the next question automatically after a brief pause.
Custom keyboard - This will show a keyboard with only valid Scrabble tiles.
Loop - At the end of a list, advances to the first item.
Screen on - If using slides, keeps the screen on.
Show hooks in quizzes - Shows the hook letters before and after each word in the list.

Technical Details

The card box filing system.

Card box databases exist in subfolders based on lexicon, and most can be copied to other devices. One reason you would want to that is to manipulate them. The locations are fixed, so you may want to backup existing databases before copying.

Location

In the Hoot app, Card boxes are located in Documents\Cards\<lexicon>\<type>.db
For example Anagrams in CSW19 are at Documents\Cards\CSW19\Anagrams.db

In all cases, the name and location determines what type they are. A database named Anagrams.db in the CSW19 folder represent anagrams in the Collins lexicon. Except for lists, Hoot card box databases are compatible with Zyzzyva, and the storage location follows the same pattern as Zyzzyva so you could copy one from there.

Current paths to Card box files
Hoot desktop path - based on the User Folder selected by the user. <UserFolder>\Cards\<lexicon>, typically C:\Users\<user>\Documents\Hoot\Cards\<lexicon>
Zyzzyva path - C:\Users\<user>\Zyzzyva\quiz\data\<lexicon>\
Collins Zyzzyva - C:\Users\<user>\.collinszyzzyva\quiz\data\<lexicon>\

Android 11 restrictions

With the update of devices to Android 11, the freedom that Hoot has to access storage is limited. With new installations on Android 11 you don't have access to the card box databases in Hoot, so you can neither upload or download databases. Of course, this restriction doesn't apply to the desktop version of Hoot. Under Android 11, the lexicon and card box databases are stored internally and removed when the app is removed.

Conversion caveats

When updated lexicons are released, it is also possible to copy a card box to a new lexicon folder and you'll be tested on the anagrams in the new lexicon. However, new anagrams may not exist in the card box for new words. For example, there are four 3 letter words in CSW19 that don't have anagrams in CSW15.

<h2 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="card-box-strategies">Card Box Strategies</h2> <p>When beginning to study word lists for Scrabble, it's useful to know what to start with and how to create useful card box databases. There are many guides to what words to learn and most are useful, so you can choose one and adjust your study based on your performance. This includes one of those guides but before you dive in you may want to look at the philosophy behind what lists to include.</p> <h3 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="objectives">Objectives</h3> <p>When studying words for Scrabble, you should focus on the objectives of your study. Knowing why you are studying different word lists helps you to understand what lists you should add to your study plan, and in this case, to your card boxes. I see three objectives to word study, other than just learning words.</p> <p><strong><em>A. Make a play on the board</em></strong><br />While it can be easy to make words on your rack, you have to find a place to play them. You can either use an existing letter on the board to make your play, or hook onto an existing letter or word. That's why you learn two and three letter words and hook words.</p> <p><em><strong>B. Make words and rack maintenance</strong></em><br />Building an extensive vocabulary will help you find words using the tiles on your rack and the board. Your ability to play off undesirable tiles will also help with you next move. That's why you learn Vowel heavy words, the Q not U words, and words with duplicate undesirable letters.</p> <p><strong><em>C. Make big plays</em></strong><br />Making high scoring plays is how you win games, so you should be able to capitalize on high point tiles, and bingo possibilities. That's why you learn seven and eight letter words (or bingos/bonuses), high fives, and words with JQXZ.</p> <p>As you look at a study plan notice that these three objectives are often pretty clear. As you play, analyze your game success and focus on what you see as your biggest problem, making a play, making words, or making big plays. As you progress consider all three types in your word study plan. There are many study guides out there. You can choose one, but you should adjust your study based on your performance, goals, and whims.</p> <h3 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="standard-or-list-card-boxes">Standard or List card boxes</h3> <p>Remember that in Hoot you can add words to either a standard (standard) card box like Anagrams, or to a List of Anagrams. The Anagrams card box stores new words as you add them and can get quite large. If you want to focus on a particular set of words you may want to use List boxes. Lists or list boxes are card boxes in Hoot built from a single search and you can create as many of these as you want. You give lists a title describing what they are. Lists are ideal for shorter lists that you can review quickly, but you may want to use them on other types of lists.</p> <h3 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="longer-lists">Longer lists</h3> <p>The standard card boxes are ideal for longer lists you want to study over an extended time. Use standard card boxes you may need to decide how many words at a time, in what order, and where to start at. Initially cards are presented in the order that you add them. When adding cards to a card box, think small. You probably don't want to add all seven letter words to begin with. If you do, you'll have to quiz yourself on those before any other cards show up.</p> <p>You should also be careful about the order when adding large number of words to a list. Within a schedule and box number, words are shown in the order added to the box. While adding them in reverse probability order is often advised, understand that the most statistically probable are made up of vowels and one point consonants, so it will be a long time before you get to higher scoring words. It's my belief that you are more likely to draw a combination of low point and high point tiles. Sorting by reverse playability may be a good alternative. </p> <h3 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="progressive-additions">Progressive Additions</h3> <p>When using standard card boxes remember that you can add and go through a list or words progressively. For example, you are not likely to want to study all four letters words at once. Instead you would be wise to add/study the most useful ones first.</p> <p>For four letter words (5638) this is one way you might add them to your card box. Subsequent additions do not duplicate, so each addition builds on the previous one. They just add the words not already in the card box.</p> <ul> <li>Top Fours (273)</li> <li>JQXZ Fours (398, 125 more)</li> <li>High Fours (1920)</li> <li>Hookless Words (963)</li> <li>All Fours (5638)</li> </ul> <p>Break down size of lists to suit your style. As you plan, notice the size of the list and decide if you want to learn them in a certain order. There are 133 vowel heavy words of length 2-5 letters, but 588 vowel heavy words of length 2-6 letters. You may want to learn the 6 letter words later. Also, while it is common to learn JQXZ words together, you could focus just on J words first.</p> <h3 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="quiz-types">Quiz types</h3> <p>There are three quiz types in Hoot, anagrams, hooks, and blank anagrams. Beginners should focus on both anagrams and hooks. Hooks are most useful when studying short words. As words get longer there are fewer hooks. Two letter words have 10-15 hook letters, while words longer than 5 letter usually have zero to one, and they are commonly S, R, or D. There are exceptions, of course. Over time anagramming will be your most important study type.</p> <p>A blank anagram is where you add a blank to the current set of letters and anagram the new set of letters. Bingo stems are a type of blank anagram. </p> <h2 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="a-card-box-plan">A Card Box Plan</h2> <p>Once you understand strategies for card box study you can select or develop your card box plan. This section just presents one such plan. Whether you use this plan or another, you should make adjustments to you plan when you discover some aspect of the game that you want to improve on, i.e. bingos/bonuses.</p> <p>This plan has five levels. Within each level study the words in any order you prefer, but you should learn most of the words in each level before going to the next level. One way to determine your progress is to look at the stats for each quiz. Ideally you should have most of the words in Card box 3 before proceeding to the next level, that is, you've answered them correctly three times in a row. When words are added to a database remember that only new words are added.</p> <h3 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="essential">Essential</h3> <ul> <li>Two Letter Words</li> </ul> <h3 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="basic">Basic</h3> <ul> <li>Two letter hooks (or hooked threes)</li> <li>JQXZ 3-5 letter words</li> <li>Q not U 2-7 letter words</li> <li>V or C 3 letter words</li> </ul> <h3 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="intermediate">Intermediate</h3> <ul> <li>Top 3 six letter stems: RETAIN, SATIRE, TISANE (List Box)</li> <li>Vowel Dumps (3-5 letter words)</li> <li>Consonants (2-5 letter words)</li> </ul> <h3 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="advancing">Advancing</h3> <ul> <li>Three Letter Words</li> <li>High Fives</li> <li>High Fours</li> <li>Three Letter Hooks (or Hooked fours)</li> <li>High Eights (???[JQXZ]*)|(????[JQXZ]*)</li> <li>I Dumps, U Dumps</li> <li>Ends in IER, IEST (5-8)</li> </ul> <h3 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="advanced">Advanced</h3> <ul> <li>Four Letter Words</li> <li>Six letter stems</li> <li>Seven letter stems</li> <li>Sevens (100+ at a time)</li> <li>Eights (100+ at a time)</li> </ul> <h3 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="plan-modifications">Plan modifications</h3> <p>As you study you may find other ways to create lists of useful words. An older piece of advice has been to learn all the seven letter words that can be formed from the letters STARLINE. I've advised using a variation of that by adding a blank: STARLINE? Card Box Strategies

When beginning to study word lists for Scrabble, it's useful to know what to start with and how to create useful card box databases. There are many guides to what words to learn and most are useful, so you can choose one and adjust your study based on your performance. This includes one of those guides but before you dive in you may want to look at the philosophy behind what lists to include.

Objectives

When studying words for Scrabble, you should focus on the objectives of your study. Knowing why you are studying different word lists helps you to understand what lists you should add to your study plan, and in this case, to your card boxes. I see three objectives to word study, other than just learning words.

A. Make a play on the board
While it can be easy to make words on your rack, you have to find a place to play them. You can either use an existing letter on the board to make your play, or hook onto an existing letter or word. That's why you learn two and three letter words and hook words.

B. Make words and rack maintenance
Building an extensive vocabulary will help you find words using the tiles on your rack and the board. Your ability to play off undesirable tiles will also help with you next move. That's why you learn Vowel heavy words, the Q not U words, and words with duplicate undesirable letters.

C. Make big plays
Making high scoring plays is how you win games, so you should be able to capitalize on high point tiles, and bingo possibilities. That's why you learn seven and eight letter words (or bingos/bonuses), high fives, and words with JQXZ.

As you look at a study plan notice that these three objectives are often pretty clear. As you play, analyze your game success and focus on what you see as your biggest problem, making a play, making words, or making big plays. As you progress consider all three types in your word study plan. There are many study guides out there. You can choose one, but you should adjust your study based on your performance, goals, and whims.

Standard or List card boxes

Remember that in Hoot you can add words to either a standard (standard) card box like Anagrams, or to a List of Anagrams. The Anagrams card box stores new words as you add them and can get quite large. If you want to focus on a particular set of words you may want to use List boxes. Lists or list boxes are card boxes in Hoot built from a single search and you can create as many of these as you want. You give lists a title describing what they are. Lists are ideal for shorter lists that you can review quickly, but you may want to use them on other types of lists.

Longer lists

The standard card boxes are ideal for longer lists you want to study over an extended time. Use standard card boxes you may need to decide how many words at a time, in what order, and where to start at. Initially cards are presented in the order that you add them. When adding cards to a card box, think small. You probably don't want to add all seven letter words to begin with. If you do, you'll have to quiz yourself on those before any other cards show up.

You should also be careful about the order when adding large number of words to a list.

Progressive Additions

When using standard card boxes remember that you can add and go through a list or words progressively. For example, you are not likely to want to study all four letters words at once. Instead you would be wise to add/study the most useful ones first.

For four letter words (5638) this is one way you might add them to your card box. Subsequent additions do not duplicate, so each addition builds on the previous one. They just add the words not already in the card box.

  • Top Fours (273)
  • JQXZ Fours (398, 125 more)
  • High Fours (1920)
  • Hookless Words (963)
  • All Fours (5638)

Break down size of lists to suit your style. As you plan, notice the size of the list and decide if you want to learn them in a certain order. There are 133 vowel heavy words of length 2-5 letters, but 588 vowel heavy words of length 2-6 letters. You may want to learn the 6 letter words later. Also, while it is common to learn JQXZ words together, you could focus just on J words first.

Quiz types

There are three quiz types in Hoot, anagrams, hooks, and blank anagrams. Over time anagramming will be your most important study type.

A blank anagram is where you add a blank to the current set of letters and anagram the new set of letters. Bingo stems are a type of blank anagram.

A Card Box Plan

Once you understand strategies for card box study you can select or develop your card box plan. This section just presents one such plan. Whether you use this plan or another, you should make adjustments to you plan when you discover some aspect of the game that you want to improve on, i.e. bingos/bonuses.

This plan has five levels. When words are added to a database remember that only new words are added.

Essential

  • Two Letter Words

Basic

  • Two letter hooks (or hooked threes)
  • JQXZ 3-5 letter words
  • Q not U 2-7 letter words
  • V or C 3 letter words

Intermediate

  • Top 3 six letter stems: RETAIN, SATIRE, TISANE (List Box)
  • Vowel Dumps (3-5 letter words)
  • Consonants (2-5 letter words)

Advancing

  • Three Letter Words
  • High Fives
  • High Fours
  • Three Letter Hooks (or Hooked fours)
  • High Eights (???[JQXZ]*)|(????[JQXZ]*)
  • I Dumps, U Dumps
  • Ends in IER, IEST (5-8)

Advanced

  • Four Letter Words
  • Six letter stems
  • Seven letter stems
  • Sevens (100+ at a time)
  • Eights (100+ at a time)

Plan modifications

As you study you may find other ways to create lists of useful words. An older piece of advice has been to learn all the seven letter words that can be formed from the letters STARLINE. I've advised using a variation of that by adding a blank: STARLINE? Other variations are RELATION?, NOTAIRE?, DEREGULATIONS.

Prioritize words by sorting differently. Sort descending by playability to learn words that have been considered the best play possible. Sort descending by score to learn high scoring words first. Sort descending by probability to learn words with high probability tiles.

Sequential additions

When studying long lists of words, it may be helpful to learn them 100 or 1000 at a time. You add these words like this. Decide on a search type and order, then set the Number of Words to 1000, and Starting With 1. After you've learned those you can add the next 1000, starting at 1001.

Also, you can break up long lists into smaller lists by using the Count and Start controls. For 100 at a time set Count to 100, and increment Start as needed (100, 1; 100, 101; 100, 201..).</p> <h3 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="deciding-between-the-standard-card-boxes-and-lists">Deciding between the standard card boxes and Lists</h3> <p>When you begin studying using Hoot or Zyzzyva, you should think carefully about how you want to build your card box database. The first thing you need to decide is if you want to use Lists or standard card boxes.</p> <h4 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="standard">Standard</h4> <p>In Hoot there are three standard card boxes: Anagrams, Hooks, and Blank Anagrams. Every time add words to the card box, they are added at the end (bottom) of the card box. If there are other cards in the card box they will be presented based on the scheduled date, and/or box number depending on your selection. Standard card boxes are very useful when you are studying long lists of words and studying a certain number of words at a time. You can progressively add words from many different sources, stems or sub anagrams, but they all go into the same pile.</p> <p>If you add all the four letter words to the card box, then all the seven letter words, you have to go through all the four letter words before getting to the seven letter words. To permit you to test yourself on a subset of what's in the card box, like seven letter words, Zyzzyva lets you filters. Instead of using a filter, Hoot lets you create separate list card boxes that let you focus on a specific list.</p> <h4 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="lists">Lists</h4> <p>List card boxes are unique to Hoot. With lists you can keep related words together. Ideal for short lists of short words or specialty lists. Beginners might want to use a list of two letter words to repeatedly test themselves until they have mastered it. In fact, I would suggest beginners test themselves on the most important words until they are all in box 3 on higher before moving on if possible. Special subject lists may be easy to remember because words are related. You can even select a text file to create a custom list.</p> <p>Intermediate players may also want to use lists to focus on each stem individually, either by studying the anagrams of each stem plus blank, or by studying blank anagrams of stems. Lists are deletable so you can get rid of them after you have mastered them. While Lists are separate, you can also add words to an existing list card box by using the same (exact) list title.</p> <h4 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="filter-and-merge">Filter and Merge</h4> <p>Deciding between list and standard card boxes is not as crucial now. In version 2.21 you can now filter standard card boxes as well as merge list card boxes into the related standard card box. You can filter a standard card box to study a subset of the cards. Keep in mind that only those words in the card box will be shown if you had previously added them. Using the filter doesn't change the order in which they are presented.</p> <p>You can now also merge words in a list card box into the respective card box. That adds the correct count, box number, and sets the scheduled date to the latter of both card boxes. So, you can use a list to study RETAIN? anagrams until you have learned them, they you can merge them into Anagrams with the other words for future review. Merging doesn't change when they were scheduled to be tested again.</p> <h4 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="getting-started">Getting started</h4> <p>While the questions in Hoot are presented chronologically based on the scheduled date, you are not bound by the date. You can quiz yourself even if you are ahead of the schedule. You do that be entering the number of questions/words you want to test on. The card box menu shows the number of cards in each box, and how many are scheduled for each date. You can then decide how many you want to test yourself on based on that. If you want to make the questions in lower box numbers a priority, check the Card box order.</p> <p>You can also make the number of questions a default in Settings so you don't have to enter a number each time. The installed default is 50. In settings you can also enter 0 as the default and Hoot will show the number of cards that are due up to the current date. If none are due the number of questions will be 0 and taking the quiz gives you all of the questions. Of course you can quit the quiz at any time, no matter what number you entered, since the statistics are updated after each word displayed. Just press the back button to return to the menu.</p> <h4 class="evo_auto_anchor_header" id="randomize">Randomize</h4> <p>In later versions of Hoot there is also the option to randomize the questions. This will mix up the words that are due within a 10 hour span. This is useful if questions are displayed in an order that is too predictable, such as words that were added alphabetically. Just check the box below the Quiz button when starting the quiz</p> <p>A good exercise to get familiar with the basics is to add two letter words to a list and try a card box quiz with that list. Part 3 contains a number of searches that may also be useful exercises.</p> <p>In the <a href="https://tylerhosting.com/b2e/dbell.php/aW5">next part</a> I discuss how card box strategies for creating useful card box databases.</p><div class="item_footer"><p><small><a href="https://tylerhosting.com/b2e/dbell.php/scrabble-card-box-guide-part-1">Original post</a> blogged on <a href="http://www.tylerhosting.com/b2e/">Switched Keys</a>.</small></p></div>
Background

This is a 3 part post is about card boxing in the Hoot word study app, and the alternate Hoot for Collins. It expands on Using Hoot Card Boxes, a previous post. While this is an extensive coverage of the subject, getting started is really as simple as creating cards and and either reviewing or taking quizzes as described below.

Card boxing is a method of study that helps you memorize words by testing you on them based on past results. While this part focuses on the mechanics of using Hoot for card box study, parts 2 and 3 may be helpful if you are using Zyzzyva for card boxing. Note that this is specifically about the Android apps, not the desktop version of Hoot, though some of these ideas can be useful there as well.

Quick Study

First let me familiarize you with quick study options in Hoot. These are not graded, but they can be helpful when you are first studying a list of words. The quick study options are displayed at the bottom of the display screen and include Slides, Review, and Quiz. After executing a search you can select one of these options.

In the Slides screen, you are just looking at the words in the list, including word, alphagram, and definition. At the bottom you can navigate the list, jump to any word, or begin an automated slide show.

In the Review screen you are shown all of the related words, i.e. the anagrams of the current word. Navigation and auto slides are also available here. Within Review select from Anagrams, Hook Words, and Blank Anagrams.

In the Quiz screen you have to enter the answer. You can also navigate and select from the list of alphagrams. Within Quiz you can select from List Recall, Anagrams, Hook Words, and Blank Anagrams.

While this is focused on card boxes, you should study in the way that is most comfortable to you. Some go straight to the quizzes, while others may find the slides and reviews more useful when starting.

Card box Quizzes

Card box quizzes are perpetually graded quizzes using the Leitner system. Using card boxes you can organize your study of Scrabble words. Each word or anagram is assigned to box 0, and is moved up or down depending on whether you get it correct or not. The words are also presented according to a calendar schedule based on what box a card is moved to, with higher boxes scheduled less frequently.

The card box system is designed to help you master lists of words. It's different from studying/testing on a list multiple times. Just because you get 90% on two or more attempts doesn't mean you "know" 90% of the words if you miss different words each time. With a card box you look at how many you always get correct. A card box is also an efficient study tool. The more you answer a word correctly, the later it's scheduled for review, so you don't waste time on stuff you already know.

In Hoot there are two box types. The first type includes the standard card boxes since there is a single box for each quiz type. The second type is the List card box. In this type you can also create multiple boxes with different lists of words.

Within both box types there are several quiz types. In Hoot there are card boxes for Anagrams, Hooks, and Blank Anagrams. Zyzzyva doesn't have Blank Anagrams but it does have Anagrams with Hooks and Word List Recall. Most players, however, focus primarily on anagrams, that is, arranging the letters to form words.

Hoot is not the only card box study tool available. It is actually based on the Zyzzyva card boxes. As of this writing you can even use the Zyzzyva card databases in Hoot although there are some differences though. In Hoot, you do not yet have the ability to filter card boxes. Also, Hoot has features not supported in Zyzzyva. The standard card box databases in the app are also compatible with the desktop version of Hoot.

Card Box Mechanics

Getting started with card box quizzes involves two steps. First you must create the cards you want to study, and then select the quiz to start it.

Creating cards

To begin, enter the parameters for your search and press Search. After the results are displayed long press anywhere in the results section
Select Add to card box (you may have to scroll to the bottom), then select Anagrams, Hooks, Blank Anagrams, or Lists. If using Lists, then select Anagrams, Hooks, or Blank Anagrams and give the list a name.

Taking quizzes

Once created, go to the menu (three dots) and Select Card Boxes, and select the quiz you want to take. If it's a list you have to select it from the dropdown there. In the card box screen there is also a Review button that you could use to review the cards in the quiz. This uses the same review screen as in the quick options. If taking a quiz, the questions (words) will be displayed appropriate for the type of quiz you are taking.

For Anagrams you answer a quiz question by entering the word using the displayed letter buttons. The buttons can be shuffled with the button on the left. When you have answered all words in the quiz question correctly, the right button turns into an arrow to go to the next question. If you can't get all of the answers, press the view button to show the answers. If correct the card is moved to the next box; otherwise it moves to a previous box about half way down.

For Hooks and Blank Anagrams you will have to enter the answers from the keyboard.

Flashcard mode

Flashcard mode can be used in all card box quiz types. In this mode you have the option to answer the questions mentally, tap on the list screen to show the answers, and then swipe up (correct) or swipe down (incorrect).

Ordering

As a part of the search you may want to consider specifications other than search type. In particular, unless you want to study alphabetically you should select primary and secondary search order. Words are added to the card box in the order they are found. Also, you can break up long lists into smaller lists by using the Count and Start controls. For 100 at a time set Count to 100, and increment Start as needed (100, 1; 100, 101; 100, 201..).

Deciding between the standard card boxes and Lists

When you begin studying using Hoot or Zyzzyva, you should think carefully about how you want to build your card box database. The first thing you need to decide is if you want to use Lists or standard card boxes.

Standard

In Hoot there are three standard card boxes: Anagrams, Hooks, and Blank Anagrams. Every time add words to the card box, they are added at the end (bottom) of the card box. If there are other cards in the card box they will be presented based on the scheduled date, and/or box number depending on your selection. Standard card boxes are very useful when you are studying long lists of words and studying a certain number of words at a time. You can progressively add words from many different sources, stems or sub anagrams, but they all go into the same pile.

If you add all the four letter words to the card box, then all the seven letter words, you have to go through all the four letter words before getting to the seven letter words. To permit you to test yourself on a subset of what's in the card box, like seven letter words, Zyzzyva lets you filters. Instead of using a filter, Hoot lets you create separate list card boxes that let you focus on a specific list.

Lists

List card boxes are unique to Hoot. You can even select a text file to create a custom list.

Intermediate players may also want to use lists to focus on each stem individually, either by studying the anagrams of each stem plus blank, or by studying blank anagrams of stems. Lists are deletable so you can get rid of them after you have mastered them. While Lists are separate, you can also add words to an existing list card box by using the same (exact) list title.

Filter and Merge

Deciding between list and standard card boxes is not as crucial now. In version 2.21 you can now filter standard card boxes as well as merge list card boxes into the related standard card box. You can filter a standard card box to study a subset of the cards. Keep in mind that only those words in the card box will be shown if you had previously added them. Using the filter doesn't change the order in which they are presented.

You can now also merge words in a list card box into the respective card box. That adds the correct count, box number, and sets the scheduled date to the latter of both card boxes. So, you can use a list to study RETAIN? anagrams until you have learned them, they you can merge them into Anagrams with the other words for future review. Merging doesn't change when they were scheduled to be tested again.

Getting started

While the questions in Hoot are presented chronologically based on the scheduled date, you are not bound by the date. You can quiz yourself even if you are ahead of the schedule. You do that be entering the number of questions/words you want to test on. The card box menu shows the number of cards in each box, and how many are scheduled for each date. You can then decide how many you want to test yourself on based on that. If you want to make the questions in lower box numbers a priority, check the Card box order.

You can also make the number of questions a default in Settings so you don't have to enter a number each time. Just press the back button to return to the menu.

Randomize

In later versions of Hoot there is also the option to randomize the questions. This will mix up the words that are due within a 10 hour span. This is useful if questions are displayed in an order that is too predictable, such as words that were added alphabetically. Just check the box below the Quiz button when starting the quiz

A good exercise to get familiar with the basics is to add two letter words to a list and try a card box quiz with that list. Part 3 contains a number of searches that may also be useful exercises.

In the next part I discuss how card box strategies for creating useful card box databases.

Hoot has many search options/types including Length, Anagrams, Prefixes, and Contains. With the exception of anagrams and the like, you can use a pattern search to execute those searches. The app help file has some help and the online pattern has an extensive section on regular expressions, the basis of pattern searches.

Basics

Below are a few help searches you might use often, but first consider the basics.

Length: To search for words of a certain length, use that many question marks

??? will find all three letter words

Contains: To search for all words containing a certain letter, put that letter between two asterisks. An asterisk represents 0 or more characters.

*F* will find all words containing an F

Pre/Suffixes: Similarly, search for words beginning with a certain letter or ending, use an asterisk and the beginning or ending.

P* shows all words beginning with a P
*IENT shows all words ending in IENT

Basic Pattern: If you want to find a word that fits a certain pattern, you can do that by mixing asterisks and the letters you are looking for.

P*F*IENT will show four words in CSW19 including PROFICIENT

Ideally you should set lengths in your search parameters first for more a efficient search.

Special Patterns

Getting into more complex territory, you will need to learn a few new characters or symbols.

Square Brackets

[ ] Contains any one of the characters within the brackets

*[KM]* will search for words containing either a K or M.

[JQXZ]* will search for words beginning with either JQXZ

^ within a bracket means to search for any character at that position except what follows

*[^KM] will search for words that do not end in K or M.

To this point, most of these characters are a part of the regular expression engine within the database, though Hoot has modified a few for Scrabble.  For example, in true regex, a letter is denoted as a period but Hoot, and most other Scrabble tools use the question mark instead. Hoot also has a few characters that are replaced before searching.

Hoot Special Characters

Two types of Hoot replacements are numbers and the letters c and v. Hoot replaces these with the characters in square brackets. Thus, for c, Hoot replaces with [AEIOU], and for 8, Hoot replaces with [JX]. Note that the value replacement will be different for different languages or tile sets. Set that in Settings under Tile Set.

*cccc will search for words ending in four consonants.

Parentheses

In pattern searches, parentheses have two uses, grouping and back searching.

You can actually do two pattern searches at one time by grouping each and adding a pipe symbol between them.

(Q[^U]*)|(JN*) will search for words that begin with a Q that is not followed by a U AND words that begin with JN.

Using parentheses for grouping will allow you to search letters within a word based on previous letters.

(???)*\1 will find words that end with the same three letters that it begins with, such as ATLATL.

(?)(?)(?)(?)\3\2\1 will show words that are palindromes, or are spelled the same forward and backward, such as DEIFIED.

Sub Patterns

Another Hoot Special is the ability to use sub patterns. They may not be so useful, but it can be fun to try. A sub pattern is enclosed in angle brackets and returns the letter represented by the ? within the sub pattern. That is then used in the rest of the pattern search.

<B?R> returns either AORU

WH<B?R>T then becomes WH[AORU]T

which returns WHAT and WHOT

Search Faster

When Hoot searches for things like Anagrams, it can figure out what length of words to search. For pattern searches Hoot doesn't know what length words it needs to search so set the word length parameters to speed the search.

Hoot is an Android app that assists in searching Scrabble word lists, and studying words for competition. Hoot can be simple to use but it also has a lot of features and options. As you navigate the different menus you can check them out. Before you get too far though, be sure to check out Settings. It'll give you an idea about some of the hidden features and how you can customize Hoot to your needs. As you use Hoot, check back with settings regularly to see any new options.

This is my list of settings that you may want to pay attention to:

Essential

Lexicon: When you are studying Scrabble words you need to pay attention to the word list you are using. You can select the wordlist with this setting. Hoot comes with NWL and CSW, while Hoot for Collins only has CSW. You may also be able to import other lexicons into your copy of Hoot.

Database: If you are able to use external storage, you can use a different database. You can also export the installed database to storage and modify by adding word lists and other lexicons. A Hoot desktop database can also be modified for use in the app. Hoot must have been first installed on Android version 10 or earlier to access external storage.

Card box location: If you are able to use external storage you can keep your card box databases in the Documents folder. Select Storage to do this. You might use this if you want to use databases from Hoot for Desktop or Zyzzyva, or export to use in those programs. Otherwise, databases will be installed internally and will be deleted. If you don't know what a card box is, read the help file, or review some of the posts in the Scrabble section.

Settings like you like it

Condensed display: When Hoot is first installed there are four rows of entry for your search. If you think that takes up too much screen real estate, by setting to condensed display, the display can be reduced to the two rows that are most common. When you do, next to the search button is an ellipsis that opens a popup for the additional information. The popup shows Begins With, Ends With, Sorting options, Rack filter, Word Limit, and Starting Item. The selections are summarized in the blue status header.

Note: Using condensed display, you will also notice that there are two Clear options. The clear in the popup only clears the information in that popup. The Clear button at the bottom of the screen clears ALL of the search criteria.

Fast scroll: After a search you can scroll the list of results when they don't fill the screen. Drag to scroll or you can fling to speed the scrolling. For extremely long lists, or for more control on positioning within the list, you can use Fast scroll. This enables a scroll button that you can drag to the position in the list that you want to be. If you've enabled fast scroll you will also notice that by just touching on the scrollbar at the bottom of the screen will take you to the bottom of the list. You can decide if that's what you want, and disable it if you want to just fling.

Custom keyboard: The custom keyboard replaces the standard Android keyboard by showing only valid letters for the search. It does not show suggestions or enable swipe typing. The keyboard will adjust to the type of entry. The pattern keyboard will show all of letters, numbers, and characters that can be used in that type of search. Most popups do not use the custom keyboard.

Dark theme: Enable dark theme to show most screens with white text on black background. Dark theme also uses less of your battery resources. With dark theme you may notice that some popup windows do not have a shadow which is something you may need to get used to.

Enable flashcard mode: When taking card box quizzes, you can enable flashcard mode to speed through questions quicker. With flashcards you will look at a word and mentally think of the answers, the tap on the result window to see the answers. If you were right swipe up to record it as correct, swipe down to record it as incorrect. To speed things up a little more, you may want to consider setting Auto Advance as well.

Auto Advance: In quizzes, you can enable auto advance to avoid having to press a button to go to the next question. There will be a slight pause to let you see the question stats and then the next question will be shown.

Keep screen on: If you are using the Hoot slides function, or tile tracker, you won't be interacting with screen very often and the display may time out. This will keep the screen on in these two functions. The time clock will always have the screen on unless you manually turn it off.

Find on tapping: If you've been using Hoot for long you realize that tapping on a word in the results will show the definition, if there is one. With this setting you can change the default to either anagrams or hook words for that particular word and the (sub-search) results will be shown in a new window. Incidentally, you can do these and other sub-searches by long pressing on a word in the results and selecting the type. Long pressing is also how you copy or save the list, or add the list to a card box.

A couple weeks ago I discovered that Hoot, my word study app, was not working when accessing files in Android external storage. After some quick research I discovered that Android 10 and 11 don't allow access to external storage using the standard File API any more. That meant the card box system quit being functional. I quickly enabled the use of Internal storage for card boxes but it didn't carry over any of the card box information.

Most apps already use internal storage and don't have a problem with Android 11, but I designed Hoot so data would be uploadable and compatible.  With some modification the search database is compatible with the desktop version of Hoot, and the card box databases are compatible with the databases of Hoot desktop and Zyzzyva.

I did two other things to improve card box access. By adding a condition in Hoot 2.16 I enabled Android 10 to again access to external storage. For Android 11, the access is more limited. By adding a different condition in Hoot 2.17, when an Android 10 device is upgraded to Android 11, external storage will continue to work on Hoot if it was previously installed. If it is uninstalled, only internal storage is available.

What you can do.

  1. If you want to continue using external card box databases, make sure Card box location is set to Storage, and avoid an upgrade to Android 11. You may be able to do that in your phone's settings, to not check for update automatically.
  2. If you do foresee an upgrade to Android 11, consider using internal card boxes by setting Card box location to Internal in Settings.
  3. If you never intend to use the card box databases elsewhere, you can also just use internal storage.

For new installs of Hoot on an Android 11 device, the search database and card box files are internal and not accessible outside of the app. The card box location then defaults to Internal. This does not allow you to use external search database, save results to file, import subject lists, import lexicons, or copy the database to external storage. You can, however, copy search results to clipboard and then open a text editor and paste there.

For card boxes this means

  1. You can't upload and use Hoot desktop or Zyzzyva card boxes.
  2. Card boxes are deleted when the app is uninstalled.

Rollout of Android 11 will continue throughout the year. You may be able to predict when it happens to you by looking at this website:  When will your phone get the Android 11 update?

I may add features to Hoot accommodate Google's new restrictions, but it will likely be a long time coming.
